most tip disputes are not about the money, they are about nobody being able to show their working. a worker asks why their share was smaller than a colleague's shift, a manager says "that's just how it's always split", and six months later it's an employment tribunal reading your rota instead of your manager. this is 10 Claude and Codex skills built from the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 and its statutory Code of Practice, in force since 1 October 2024, not from a staffroom rule of thumb.

the detail in them is the Act's own. every qualifying tip has to be paid out by the end of the month after the month the customer left it, a tip on 23 June must be distributed by 31 July, no exceptions for a slow payroll run. a worker can bring a tribunal claim over how tips were split or paid within 12 months, but only 3 months over a missing written policy or missing records, two different clocks on the same dispute. and a tronc keeps its National Insurance exemption only while the employer plays no part, directly or indirectly, in deciding who gets what; the moment an owner's instructions are what the troncmaster is actually following, that exemption is gone.

what they get you:

- split a tip pool by the factors the Code actually names, not a guess
- keep a troncmaster's record independent enough to survive an inspection
- catch a card processing fee quietly taken off a tip before it reaches staff
- write the tipping policy the Act requires, in plain English
- check every tip was paid out by its statutory deadline, not whenever payroll got to it
- confirm an agency worker wasn't quietly left out of the split
- know the exact tribunal clock and compensation cap a complaint sits on
- tell a service charge, a voluntary charge and a tip apart before HMRC does
- test whether a tronc is really independent, HMRC's own way
- track the three-year clock on every tip record you're required to keep

half of them think it through in Claude, half get it done in Codex. one folder each. a minute to install.

most of what they find is arithmetic nobody checks until someone asks. the tribunal compensation cap is £5,000 per claim, whether or not the tribunal also orders the allocation itself revised. deductions from a qualifying tip are disregarded when working out what the customer actually paid, so a card fee taken off the top doesn't shrink the amount you owe staff, it just means you're short. and from 1 January 2027 employers will have to consult staff before writing or reviewing a tipping policy, and update it at least every 3 years after that, so a policy written today should already expect that.

no HR consultancy to hire, no compliance software subscription, no payroll add-on to buy. you keep running tips exactly how you run them now, these just make sure the numbers add up to what the law actually requires.

10 skills. one complete system.
