Train a new starter in a day, not a week: 10 AI skills for onboarding.

HSE's own finding is why the first days matter most: a worker is as likely to have an accident in their first 6 months as during the rest of their working life.

10 skills for training a new starter in a day, not a week.

a new starter doesn't actually need a week. they need the handful of things that are genuinely legal duties done properly on day one, and everything else can happen while they're actually working. HSE's own finding is the reason the first days matter more than the rest: a worker is "as likely to have an accident in their first 6 months at work" as during the whole of the rest of their working life. Most of that risk sits in the gap between what gets said in an induction chat and what actually gets written down.

the detail in them is the law's own, not generic HR advice. the written statement of employment particulars is due "not later than the beginning of the employment", that's day one, not week one. a right to work check done wrong, or not kept for the 2 years the guidance sets, is what stands between you and a civil penalty of up to £60,000 per illegal worker. and the Food Standards Agency's own free allergen course says of itself that it "does not constitute accreditation" and "should not be relied upon as evidence of competence" on its own, which most training logs quietly skip over.

what they get you:

- get every paperwork duty done before the first shift, not chased after it
- run the check that actually protects you from a £60,000 fine, not just a look at a passport
- prove who was trained on allergens and when, not just that a poster is on the wall
- build the fire induction from your own risk assessment, not a generic template
- turn "how's it going" into a dated pass, fail or extend decision
- size the shadowed shifts to the risk before anyone works alone
- see every training duty against every member of staff, in one place
- check an apprentice's hours against the 20% rule before a funding audit does
- know how long you actually have to keep what you're keeping
- build an induction that gets checked, not just signed

half of them think it through in Claude, half get it done in Codex. one folder each. a minute to install.

more of what's in there: National Minimum Wage records went from a 3-year to a 6-year keep in 2021, a change most pay files never caught up with. an apprentice's 20% off-the-job training can't include "time spent on initial assessment and onboarding", so logging a new starter's whole induction week as training hours is exactly the mistake a funding audit is built to find. and the Apprenticeship Levy itself only bites at a £3 million pay bill, with a £15,000 allowance taken off first, so most independent venues are checking a number they don't actually owe.

no induction platform to buy, no HR consultant on a day rate, no generic template downloaded three years ago and never updated. you keep training people your own way, these just make sure the handful of bits that are actually law get done properly, on day one, and stay provable.

10 skills. one complete system.
